When it comes to choosing a piece of jewellery, one that consists a genuine diamond always seems to be the right call. Generally, a beautiful precious stone is the one that shines the brightest, but few people actually know that this is not the main quality criterion and not all diamonds are the same. There are multiple types of gems, and the most accurate classification is based on their physical and chemical particularities. All these are evaluated by specialists in dedicated laboratories and are quite difficult to establish by inexperienced individuals. However, there are some criteria most people keep in mind when purchasing a diamond, and these are the reputable four C’s: cut, clarity, colour and carats. The cut

To begin with, you need to know that the cut is the most important characteristic of a diamond. The main reason for this is that it has the greatest influence over the appearance and probably more important, the shine of the gem stone. Gemologists use the cut to measure the diamond’s light performance, commonly known as the “sparkle”.  This is mostly due to the fact that the higher the cut grade, the better reflection of light on the diamond’s surface. This means that if you are looking for one of the shiniest and most valuable gems, you should go for one that has a high number of cuts, according to experts. Of course, you also have to keep in mind your budget.

The clarity

Although you may thing this quality measures the level of transparency of a diamond, you are mistaken. Clarity is the feature that defines the number and size of the imperfections that can be found in almost any precious gem. The cleared the diamond, the greater its value. The most expensive ones as, of course, those that are the most transparent. However, it is extremely difficult to find a stone that is flawless from this point of view, since most of them have tiny (even microscopic) imperfections that cannot be spotted with the bare eye. For this reason, they do not affect the diamond’s beauty.

The colour

The more expensive types of diamonds are the ones that are completely colourless – these are considered the ideal gems. What you need to know is that in spite of the fact that most gems seem to be completely transduced, their hue consists in shades of yellow or brown. As a matter of fact, the most popular authority in diamond certifications classifies shades on a scale ranging from D (totally transparent) to Z (strongly tinted).

The carat weight

Carat is used to determinate the diamond’s weight, but not necessarily its size (because density and other criteria are also involved in the measuring process). The size is evaluated by looking at the gem from above, because this is how it will be seen after being integrated into a piece of jewellery.
